Description:

P-aminophenol (PAP), the major raw material of paracetamol, has kept growing in China in recent years. Stimulated by robust demand from paracetamol consumption and export, China’s PAP capacity and output has been expanding fast. With the large capacity expansion in 2007, China's PAP supply is surplus. However, the higher iron content of Chinese PAP has made China's manufacturers difficult to find, for the surplus PAP, new overseas markets except the Asian market, the major destination of China's exported PAP. All the Chinese PAP manufacturers except one adopt iron reduction method.

With the fluctuating crude oil price and the global financial crisis in 2008, how have Chinese producers been affected? What has happened and will happen to China's PAP production and export?

To further penetrate into the industry, especially the future situation, CCM has produced this report, hoping to provide you with answers to the above and the following questions:

What is the current situation and trends of PAP production in China?
How has China's PAP import and export changed in the past years, especially in 2007 and Jan-Aug 2008?
How has consumption structure of PAP in China changed?
What is the raw material supply situation in China?
What is the future of PAP industry in China till 2015?

Executive Summary

(Note: The following summary is based on the situation in 2008 and maybe different to what it is nowadays. Please be noted.)

Ø Production Situation

ü Driven by the demand from the downstream products especially paracetamol, P-aminophenol (PAP) industry in China keeps developing rapidly in recent years, with the capacity CAGR of xx% from 2003 to 2008, and output CAGR of xx% from 2003 to 2007.

ü The number of PAP manufacturers in China sharply dropped from the previously xx to xx active ones in 2008, with the decrease attributed to several factors, such as intense competition in recent years, growing waste treatment cost, rising raw material price, or immature technology of non- iron reduction method.

Ø Export Situation

The export amount of PAP has been increasing dramatically in the recent years, thanks to the lower price of China’s PAP than that of other countries because most China’s PAP is produced by iron reduction method. China’s PAP export has been growing faster than that of domestic consumption, as well as output from 2003 to 2007.

Ø Consumption Situation

Apart from export, PAP was mainly consumed by paracetamol industry in China. Different from other overseas countries, China’s PAP is not widely used in rubber antioxidant. In the dyestuff industry, PAP is mainly used in sulfur dyestuffs, but the PAP volume of using in dyestuff takes much smaller proportion than that in paracetamol.

Ø Technologies

Different from overseas countries, most China’s PAP manufacturers employ iron reduction method, which generates much pollution. Anhui Bayi is the only enterprise that employs catalytic hydrogenation of p-nitrophenol method to produce PAP in China. But it was said that the quality of XXX’s PAP was not very stable.

Ø CCM’s Comment on Future Situation of PAP

PAP production growth in China will slow down in 2009 because of globe economic depression, but as globe economy might turns well in 2010 and non- iron reduction technologies are to improve, the output of PAP will increase much from 2010. The development of paracetamol industry is the key driver for the growth of PAP output.

It is believable that XXX technology is the future trend for PAP production. However, the dominant role of XXX method will last for a long time. That is because the slow development of substitute technologies of XXX method can not meet the rapidly increasing demand of PAP from paracetamol industry and other end use segments.
