As a selective and contact toxicity herbicide, oxadiazon is generally used as pre-seedling herbicide mainly in soil treatment. At present, China is the only supplier of oxadiazon technical in the world. The supply and price of Chinese oxadiazon have great impacts on the global market. Every year, over 70% of oxadiazon produced in China is exported to overseas countries. Domestic demand for oxadiazon is small. How is the domestic consumption of oxadiazon in China? As a selective and contact toxicity herbicide, oxadiazon is generally used as pre-seedling herbicide mainly in soil treatment. China is the only supplier of oxadiazon technical in the world at present. The supply and price of Chinese oxadiazon have great impacts on the global market.

- Production situation of oxadiazon in China
The supply of oxadiazon technical was sufficient in China before 2008. As some production lines of oxadiazon technical have been stopped since 2007, the supply of oxadiazon decreases and it is of short supply in 2008. At present, there are 5 oxadiazon technical producers in China, with total capacity of XXXt/a as of Oct. 2008. At present, the major oxadiazon formulations in China include acetochlor•oxadiazon EC, butachlor•oxadiazon EC, 12.5% oxadiazon EC and 25% oxadiazon EC.

- Import and export situation of oxadiazon
As the only supplier of oxadiazon technical, China has little oxadiazon imported from the overseas countries. Oxadiazon industry in China highly depends on the overseas market. Every year, over XXX% of oxadiazon (AI) produced in China is exported to more or less 20 countries. Owing to the supply decline of oxadiazon technical in China, the export volume of oxadiazon decreases sharply in 2008.

- Price of oxadiazon
The price of oxadiazon is rather high compared to other herbicides. The oversupply of oxadiazon has led to its low price, which was around USDXXX/t (RMBXXX/t) ~ USDXXX/t (RMBXXX/t) in China in 2007. Since some producers have stopped the production of oxadiazon, it is of short supply in China in 2008, thus resulting in its price increase.

- Production technology
Almost all the Chinese producers adopt 2,4-dichlorophenol route in the production of oxadiazon technical, with 2,4-dichlorophenol and pivaloyl chloride as the main raw materials. During the synthesis of oxadiazon technical, many pollutants which are difficult to be dealt with are generated. Owing to the environmental problem, many producers were forced to close down in China.

- Domestic demand for oxadiazon
In China, oxadiazon is registered for the control of annual gramineous weeds and broadleaf weeds in the fields of rice, cotton, soybean, peanut, rapeseed and garlic. At present, oxadiazon is mainly used in the fields of rice, soybean and garlic, and the key market of oxadiazon in China concentrates in Northeast China and East China, mainly including XXX, XXX, XXX and XXX, which are the earliest promoting regions of oxadiazon in China with quite mature market.
