Description:
Malathion, a broad-spectrum, low toxicity and low price organophosphate insecticide, has been used in China for about 40 years. Currently, China’s malathion industry is still largely domestic-focused, with no more than 1,500 tonnes exported in 2008 for example.
Low toxicity is one of malathion’s largest advantages as China is dedicated to developing low-toxic and highly efficient pesticides to reduce potential environmental risk. The ban of 5 highly toxic insecticides leaves large market for low-toxic pesticides. As an economic insecticide with broad spectrum, malathion is expected to partly fill in the gap.
Broad-spectrum and low price are another two key characteristics of malathion. Many peasants are accustomed to mixing malathion with other pesticides to enhance the control effect on a range of crops.
Besides, malathion price is mainly influenced by the supply of raw materials, including maleic anhydride, phosphorus pentasulfide, ethanol and methanol, which are all commodity chemicals with sufficient supply and relatively low prices.
This report has deeply analyzed various aspects of malathion industry, including the production and consumption situation, technology and raw materials supply, major formulations, its completive advantages compared with other insecticides as well as the key drivers and restraints for the development of malathion industry in detail.
- What’s the production situation of malathion industry in the past, present and future?
- How will the ban of ‘5 highly toxic insecticides’ impact the industry?
- What is the malathion consumption pattern?
- Whether mixed formulation will lead the development of malathion industry?
- Which kinds of mixed formulation will be dominant over others?
- How will this industry change in the next 5 years?
CCM will answer these questions in this report. Besides, the comments from Chinese producers, traders and experts on the development of malathion industry will also be included.

Malathion, a broad-spectrum organophosphate insecticide, is one of the top insecticides having been used for about XXX years in China. Currently, the production capacity of malathion technical reaches XXXt/a, with output of over XXX tonnes in 2008.
Since 1984, only XXX companies have registered malathion technical, including XXX new entrants in 2008. Besides, the newly amended regulation for pesticides registration released by Ministry of Agriculture in 2007, which has heightened the threshold for registration through standardized regulations, has also promoted the registration for malathion.
With the development of malathion industry, most technical producers are able to produce high purity malathion technical, with XXX and XXX technical having been registered most in recent years. Besides, there are a variety of malathion formulations registered, mainly including XXX malathion EC, fenvalerate•malathion, β-cypermethrin•malathion, malathion•sumithion, malathion•phoxim, dichlorovos•malthion, cypermethrin•malathion, and deltamethrin•malathion.
Among the active malathion technical producers, Shandong Tianfeng, Liaoning Lingyun and SinoChem Ningbo are considered as first-class producers. Currently, the three companies are the oldest and largest malathion producers, with capacity of XXXt/a, XXXt/a and XXXt/a.
Most technical producers also produce XXX malathion EC, with Hebei Hengsheng being the largest with XXXt/a capacity. But technical producers rarely produce mixed formulations due to small demand. Currently, Shandong Jingpeng is the largest mixed formulation producer with output of XXX tonnes in 2008.
China has exported about XXX tonnes malathion to XXX countries in 2008, with the top 5 destinations being Mexico, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan and Venezuela, which have imported over XXX tonnes XXX malathion technical from China. The major exported products are XXX malathion technical, XXX malathion EC and XXX malathion EC.
Most malathion products are consumed at home, with total consumption volume of around XXX tonnes in 2008. It has been applied on a range of crops, including cotton, fruit, vegetable, rice, wheat, lawn, etc. Among them, cotton, fruit, vegetable and rice are the most important application fields, which consume around XXX tonnes, XXX tonnes, XXX tonnes and XXX tonnes in 2008.
Both of malathion capacity and output are expected to fall in the coming 5 years. By 2013, the capacity is estimated to drop to XXXt/a, and output XXX tonnes. Besides, the demand is forecasted to shrink to XXX tonnes from around XXX tonnes in 2009. But the export is predicted to grow, with the export volume reaching over XXX tonnes in 2013.
