Description:
Glyphosate 10%SL is a specific formulation, which is produced and consumed in China only.
There are three production methods of 10%SL, and in China over 95% of the 10%SL is produced from mother liquor of glyphosate, which is hazardous to the environment.
Due to the pollution of 10%SL, many experts and key glyphosate players such as Zhejiang Wynca have repeatedly suggested forbidding the use of 10%SL in China on some conferences and agrochemical exhibitions.
But the ban of 10%SL will greatly impact China's consumption structure of glyphosate formulations, the domestic glyphosate production and then the global glyphosate supply.
First, the ban of 10%SL will largely increase the production cost of glyphosate since currently most domestic glyphosate producers don’t treat their mother liquor of glyphosate at all.
Second, if 10%SL is banned, the substitute will be 41%IPA or other specifications at higher prices, which are difficult to be promoted and inconvenient when spraying.
This report discusses the possibility of the ban of glyphosate 10%SL in China from aspects of glyphosate production, government policy, comment from formulation producers and glyphosate producers, R & D of waste treatment technology, etc, and provides an in-depth analysis of this industry.

Glyphosate 10%SL, only produced and consumed in China, is the most popular and largest herbicide formulation in China.
In China, many glyphosate technical producers choose to recycle the mother liquor for producing glyphosate 10%SL to lower the huge expenditure on discharge treatment, as mother liquor contains high content of salts and other organic chemicals which are hazardous to the environment.
With the popularization of chemical weeding in non-tillage farmlands, China’s demand for glyphosate has been growing quickly in recent years, and increasing companies have registered to produce glyphosate formulations. Glyphosate 10%SL has become the major formulation registered the most in China. As of December 2008, XXX companies have registered glyphosate 10%SL in China, and XXX of them have active registrations.
In 2008, China’s total output of glyphosate 10%SL is estimated at XXX tonnes, and the consumption of glyphosate 10% SL shares over XXX% of the total glyphosate in China, mainly attributed to Chinese peasants’ use habit and promotion situation of glyphosate formulations.
Many reasons are responsible for the popularization of glyphosate 10%SL in China, one of the key reason is that Chinese glyphosate technical producers can make profits from utilizing the mother liquor to produce glyphosate 10%SL and lower the treatment investment.
With the growing environmental protection awareness, more and more people are aware of the risk of utilizing glyphosate 10%SL, and some experts appeal for the ban of registration and use of glyphosate 10%SL.
If the ban of glyphosate 10%SL occurs, many aspects, including glyphosate technical production, circulation and formulations application, will be influenced, thus changing China’s supply and consumption structure of glyphosate.
This report focuses on the production technology and theoretical cost model of 10%SL, the position of glyphosate 10%SL, China’s disposal of wastewater in glyphosate production, reasons of China’s popularity of glyphosate 10%SL, the consumption and environmental risk, and then discuss the possibility of China’s ban of glyphosate 10%SL in the scope of technology feasibility, macro economic situation, China’s glyphosate consumption and overall situation of China’s glyphosate industry.
