Description:
Fipronil is an outstanding insecticide and has played an important role in pest control in China. However, fipronil industry development will be largely restricted as Chinese government released the regulation on 25 February, 2009, which declares to restrict the use of fipronil in China since 1 October 2009. The restriction of fipronil use in China will greatly impact the whole industry, fipronil producers as well as the market of insecticide in China.
This report is focused on the aspects of production, consumption & export situation, production technology, cost, raw material supply, patent issues, governmental policy and its impact on the industry, new market opportunities arising from the restriction regulation, manufacturers and experts’ responses to the use restriction of fipronil in China as well as .
The following points are clearly addressed in the report:
- The development and technology level of Chinese fipronil industry.
- The route and the cost of fipronil in China
- Patent protection of fipronil in China
- The background and regulation details of the restricted use of fipronil in China
- Production and export situation of every fipronil producer in China
- Raw material supply situation of fipronil industry
- Domestic consumption of fipronil
- Responses from every fipronil producer and their plan consequent to the restricted use of fipronil in China
- Impacts and market trend the of restricted use on fipronil industry
- Market opportunity brought by the restricted use of fipronil in China

Fipronil, an outstanding insecticide in crop protection, had been recommended as a substitute for highly toxic insecticides and played an important role in pest control in China.
Attracted by promising market and fat profit, many domestic companies took part in fipronil production, with most of them without license. As of May 2009, XXX companies in China, including Bayer CropScience (China) had produced fipronil product, XXX of which are active at present, with total production capacity of XXXt/a. Among these active producers, XXX are absolutely fipronil formulation producers.
Technologies adopted by domestic companies XXX in recent years. They use XXX or 2,6-dichloro-4-trifluoromethylaniline synthesized from 3,4-Dichlorobenzotrifluoride as starting raw material. But the products produced by this technology have lower quality than Bayer’s.
In 2008, total output of fipronil (converted to 100% TC) was XXX tonnes, including XXX tonnes of fipronil 5% SC and XXX tonnes of fipronil 80% WP. Output of fipronil from Bayer CropScience (China) constituted XXX of the total.
China exported XXX tonnes of fipronil technical and XXX tonnes of fipronil 5% SC (the only fipronil formulation exported) in 2008. The averaged export price of fipronil technical (95%) and 5% SC were USDXXX/kg and USDXXX/kg respectively. Export price of Bayer CropScience (China)’s fipronil was 10%~50% time higher than that of domestic producers.
In Q1 2009, China exported XXXtonnes of fipronil technical and XXX tonnes of 5%SC, with export price of USDXXX/kg and USDXXX/kg respectively. China’s fipronil is mainly exported to Asian countries.
Chinese government released a policy to restrict fipronil use in China from 1 October 2009. This policy greatly impact China’s fipronil industry, and all the fipronil producers will respond to this policy.
This report “The Survey of Fipronil in China” focuses on the aspects of production situation, consumption & export situation, production technology, cost, raw material supply, patent issues, governmental policy, consequence of the China’s fipronil industry caused by the ban as well as manufactures and experts’ responses to the restricted use of fipronil in China.
