Description:

As one of the key raw material in glyphosate production via AEA pathway, glycine has been boosted in China these years, driven by the soaring demand of glyphosate across the world due to the booming biofuel crops.

China, blessed with the relatively low production cost, has been a major glyphosate technical supplier in the world now. As the output of glyphosate by AEA pathway increases by 80,700 tonnes in 2008 over the previous year, the investment in glycine industry has largely increased in the past 2 years in China.

Currently, tech-grade glycine dominates China's glycine market among all the four grades in China, and with its largest consumption field being glyphosate industry.

To penetrate into Chinese glycine industry, CCM surveys all the four kinds of glycine in China in this report, particularly the tech-grade related to glyphosate industry.

From this report, you will get the answers to the following questions:

What is the current status and the future trend of Chinese glycine production?

How does China's glycine production pathway differ from that in overseas countries?

What is the consumption situation of Chinese glycine?

How does glyphosate industry influence glycine industry in China?

Executive Summary

(Note: The following summary is based on the situation in 2008 and maybe different to what it is nowadays. Please be noted.)

Though all the 4 grades of glycine including tech-grade, feed-grade, food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade are produced in China, China’s glycine market is dominated by tech-grade glycine, which accounts for XXX % of the nation’s total output in 2008.

More than XXX% of tech-grade glycine is applied in the domestic glyphosate industry. Besides glyphosate, other end-use segments of glycine are feed, food and pharmaceutical in China. Around XXX% of feed-grade, food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade glycine produced in China is exported in 2008.

Output of glyphosate adopting AEA pathway will reach XXX tonnes in China in 2008, consuming XXX tonnes glycine totally. Unit consumption of tech-grade glycine is around XXXt/t in glyphosate production.

There are at least XXX glycine producers in China, but most of them only have small capacity, less than XXXt/a. Hebei Donghua Chemical Group (Hebei Donghua) is the largest glycine producer in Asia with the capacity of XXXt/a and output of XXX tonnes tech-grade glycine in 2008.

All the Chinese glycine producers adopt chloroacetic acid pathway, though Chongqing Sanxia Yingli Co., Ltd. (Sanxia Yingli), a potential glycine producer, is conducting trial production via HCN pathway now.

Regarding industry standard system of glycine, it has not yet been completely established in China. Currently, only industry standards of tech-grade glycine and food-grade glycine have been issued by Chinese government, while the feed-grade glycine and pharmaceutical-grade glycine are still produced according to producers’ own standards or some foreign standards such as USP-24 and BP-98.

The price of glycine is closely related to glyphosate industry, the largest consumption field of glycine in China, consuming about XXX% of total glycine output and more than XXX% of tech-grade glycine. The current price of tech-grade glycine is even lower than the cost, mainly attributable to the dismal glyphosate market and falling price of raw material, such as urotropine and chloroacetic acid. Nevertheless, its price is projected to increase slightly. Hebei Donghua is in a dominating position in glycine pricing since it has captured more than XXX% shares of Chinese tech-grade glycine market.

Chinese glycine industry will be further integrated and competitiveness of large-scale glycine producers will be further enhanced, while an increasing number of small glycine producers will withdraw glycine market in the next 5 years, impacted by the depression of the global economy.
